Saturday afternoon at a private residence in Bridgehampton, the Parrish Art Museum held a cocktail reception to celebrate summer 2014 at the museum and to kick-off its annual Midsummer benefit gala, which will be held in the Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in Water Mill.

This year they will be honoring philanthropist Inga Maren Otto and author/documentary filmmaker Katharina Otto-Bernstein. Attendees will get the wonderful last chance to see artist Jennifer Bartlett's first major museum survey, and Maya Lin's ecologically inspired sculptures. This past Thursday at American Museum of Natural History, The Junior Council concluded its 2013-2014 season with Inside Dark Universe—a special screening of the Museum’s Space Show Dark Universe, which is narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium. The event featured remarks by Rosamond Kinzler, the executive producer of Dark Universe and senior director of science education at the Museum, and Vivian Trakinski, Dark Universe producer. Afterwards, there was a cocktail and jazz reception on the Museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace.

Dark Universe takes viewers through the recent dramatic advances in our knowledge of the universe and explores what’s to come in the future of cosmology. Through an extremely detailed, never-before-seen visualization based on new scientific data, the audience experiences how dark matter—an invisible form of matter—shapes galaxies and delves into the mysteries of dark energy, the force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe.

This year's Swan Award was presented to the internationally-renowned designer Bunny Williams of New York City. Ms. Williams has many connections with the Nashville crowd, including her long-time support of Cheekwood and its annual Antiques & Gardens Show. The event's special headline entertainment, always a favorite, was Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell. Yes, the same "wild and crazy guy" who is also one of the country's leading Americana genre musicians.

The Swan Ball 2014 brought back Verdura, one of Ball's most beloved jewelers, with a very special and exclusive 75th anniversary showing.

Immediately following dinner, five select lots were sold in a live auction led by Sotheby's own Jamie Niven.

The award is presented to individuals who have overcome their stuttering disorders and later established themselves in rewarding and influential careers.
Arthur Blank, Suzy Welch, and Jes Staley
The Awards Presentation was hosted by Becky Quick of MSNBC’s Squawk BoxArthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Co-Founder of The Home Depot, served as Gala Co-Chair and The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers provided an idyllic backdrop for a fantastic evening.

Ellis Lankster of the New York Jets and Trumaine McBride of the New York Giants teamed up with Arthur Blank in a show of unity to tackle the public’s misperceptions about stuttering.  Blank, a previous recipient of the award, took the opportunity to jokingly caution both players not to perform too well next time they’re up against the Falcons.

AIS is a pioneer in the treatment of stuttering and is one of the few non-profit organizations in the U.S. that provides assistance to people of all ages who stutter as well as to their families.

Christofle hosted a reception last month at their Madison Avenue boutique at 846 Madison Avenue (between 69th and 70th). It was a theme event as part of their Star Table monthly series. Last month's theme, "A Wedding Celebration," featured fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who created an installation exhibiting their wedding dress and table setting chosen from Christofle’s Albi pattern. It was a lovely, inspiring installation: flowers were from ZeZe and the table linens were from their friends’ company Leonline Linens, who create beautiful monogramed linens.

The Star Table series is an ongoing design inspiration program featuring Christofle tablescapes designed and set by celebrity designers and introduced with a unique special event each month. This month's theme stars interior designer Thom Filicia's "Summer Fete."

“The Club has created a family away from home and has given me the security from the outside world," said Luz Negron, Madison Square Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year and newly named New York State Youth of the Year  "It has given me so many opportunities that I would have never thought would be within my reach.  The Club is my home.”

On Friday, July 11th, Island Moving Co. held its summer gala Nuit Blanche Opera Garnier - A Luminous Evening of Performance in the Magical Gardens of Bellevue House.

Dancers dived into the pool for an emotional aquatic ballet, an opera singer trilled in the pergolas, and New York's Tin Pan Band led 400 guests through the magnificent gardens of Bellevue House, Newport, from performance to exciting performance. It was an artistic Folie among Ronald Lee Fleming's gardens at Bellevue House in Newport.

Nuit Blanche's theme this year was "Opéra Garnier," inspired by the glorious Paris Opera House with its colorful Marc Chagall ceiling, featuring stunning décor by artist/designer John Sawicki.  Newport's resident contemporary ballet company invited musicians, singers, painters and other artists to join the Company's dancers in short performances set among the allées, follies and ornamental pools of the gardens.  The evening also included a live auction, hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and dancing for all to music by New York's Tin Pan Band.

Ballroom dancers from FloorTime studios graced the garden, opera singer Youngchul Park sang thrillingly, musician Taeyoung Lee played, the Parisian duo On Est Gentils acted, violinist John Bergin, Mime Vlad Tenenbaum, and a musical duo, La Merchante et le Connard, played, Olympic bronze medalist figure skater Marissa Castelli from Cranston was a special guest.

The guests wandered the gardens and the performances at their leisure until musicians and dancers led them to the tent for a live auction led by Emlen Drayton, and a silent auction of very select items. The "Nuit Blanche" shoe competition was afoot, the winner receiving a gift certificate to Jo's American Bistro in Newport.

"Nuit Blanche" colloquially means "sleepless night", and the dancing continued well into the night. No one wanted to sleep.

Late last month, 200 guests raised nearly $200,000 for capital improvements at inner-city elementary Catholic schools during Inner-City Scholarship Fund's 14th annual Project YESS Reception at the Top of the Rock observation deck at Rockefeller Center. Schools that will receive improvements are supported by Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the city's leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing tuition assistance for low-income students attending inner-city Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of New York.

Along with Tim Muccia, Project YESS Co-Chair and Inner-City Trustee, His Eminence, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, addressed the hundreds of guests, thanking them for their continued support.

This year 26 schools have been chosen for grant awards. Proceeds from the event will go towards updating security systems at St. Brendan School and Santa Maria School in the Bronx and Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Manhattan and will benefit Project YESS and their grants for inner-city elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York in need of capital improvements and repairs. The repairs range from installing improved lighting, to fixing broken windows and upgrading security systems. The grants ensure that the schools can provide a safe, nurturing environment for students as well as to help increase enrollment. Since 1998 Project YESS has provided over $4.2 million to schools for over 250 projects.

Inner-City Scholarship Fund was founded in 1971 by the late Terence Cardinal Cooke and a group of prominent executives of many religious beliefs. Inner-City provides tuition assistance to over 7,500 students (92% minority and 33% non-Catholic) in 79 inner-city Catholic schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. An astonishing 98% percent of seniors attending inner-city Catholic high schools graduate, and 96% pursue college at some of the finest universities in the nation.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation launched “Ladies Who Lunch for A Cure” at a private East Side landmark residence owned by Dena K. Weiner and David Rozenholc.  The event honored Nicole Miller and showcased her Spring/Summer 2014 collection before a private audience, and benefited the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. Guests in attendance included fashion designer Nicole Miller, Samuel Waxman, Marion Waxman, Ramona Singer, Dena Weiner, Jean Shafiroff, Pamela Morgan, Adrienne Kantor, Jessica Cohen and Maria Fishel, among others.

Nicole Miller said, “I am honored to have been asked to launch this event that supports the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. It is through research that an end to this dreaded disease will be realized. I am delighted to support such a worthy cause.”

The luncheon was the first event of its kind to raise funding for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. “We are honored that Nicole Miller accepted our invitation to be the first celebrated fashion designer to launch the event.  Not only will her support draw attention to our cause, it will raise the much needed funding for our cancer research programs,” said Dr. Samuel Waxman, Founder and CEO of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation.

“Support for charities and foundations has been dramatically cut by the Federal Government.  Therefore it has been left to philanthropic organizations to find private resources and creative ways to sustain the work of their institutions,” points out Dr. Waxman.  “We anticipate ‘Ladies Who Lunch for a Cure’ will be one of many such events in the coming years to augment the funding efforts,” he adds.

A raffle featuring items such as dinner at Aretzky’s Patroon, Arlotta Cashmere robe and slippers, Botkier Handbag, Brooks Brothers leather attaché, Dolce & Gabbana clutch from Collette, award-winning wines from Palm Bay and a unique necklace from Marlene Brown Fine Jewelry provided additional excitement to the event.  The event’s contemporary luncheon was catered by renowned Restaurant Associates.

The Super Saturday scene.
This past Saturday at Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill, Kelly Ripa and Donna Karan hosted Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s (OCRF) 17th annual Super Saturday, sponsored by QVC with a special preview hour that began at noon. Super Saturday 17 raised $3.5 million for Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Super Saturday 17 is OCRF’s fun-filled, family-oriented daylong fundraiser, complete with a one-of-a-kind designer garage sale, kids’ carnival and activities, a luxury raffle and gourmet treats.  Once dubbed “the Rolls-Royce of garage sales,” the most anticipated element of Super Saturday is the fashion garage sale, which included merchandise from nearly 200 prominent participants including: Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, INTERMIX, Vince, IRO, Alexis Bittar, Bonpoint, Haute Hippie, Nanette Lepore, Milly, Theory, Elie Tahari, Diane von Furstenberg, alice + olivia, Scoop NYC, Vilebrequin, J Brand and Helmut Lang.  Decades founder Cameron Silver curated “Camerons Corner”, a mix of vintage and modern pre-loved clothing and accessories. For the seventh consecutive year, the “Designers A to Zoe” booth by Rachel Zoe featured a compilation of pieces from her favorite luxury designers including Etro, Oscar De La Renta, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler and Stella McCartney.
OCRF and QVC united once again for “QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE,” a live, on-site broadcast, offering viewers nationwide the chance to purchase premier fashion, beauty, jewelry, accessories and home items for half the suggested retail price, with net proceeds benefitting OCRF. To date, QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE has delivered more than $7.4 million to OCRF.

In addition to incredible shopping, OCRF’s Super Saturday 17 offered attendees an afternoon of activities and indulgences. Guests loved Priv’s Braid Bar which offered fresh summer hairstyles and enjoyed psychic readings with Betsy Wahmann. Attendees stopped by the Rolls-Royce photo booth helping further support OCRF. For each shared photo, Rolls-Royce made a donation to OCRF.
There was an on-site luxury raffle with prizes from designers including Vhernier, Lorraine Schwartz, Charlotte Olympia, Dolce & Gabbana and Pologeorgis Furs and experiences donated by The New York Football Giants, Trump National Golf Club and Flywheel Sports, among others. Additionally, OCRF’s Super Saturday Online Auction began July 16th with amazing one-of-a-kind VIP experiences, celebrity meet & greets and so much more! Bidding took place at www.charitybuzz.com/supersaturday.

For children at Super Saturday 17, there were rides, games and arts and crafts galore.  New to Super Saturday, Stitched Fashion Camp gave kids the chance to tap into their inner designer. Parsons Professor/Fashion Designer Rob Younkers and Yahoo Fashion Editor-in-Chief and Executive Creative Officer Joe Zee worked with children sketching, designing and styling one-of-a-kind t-shirts embellished with custom-made designs from Swarovski.  Also this summer, over at Camp Divalysscious, kids enjoyed arts & crafts all day with the Craft Studio, a dance party with “Jam with Jamie and Friends!” special performances from Wendy The Pipe Cleaner Lady and Didi Maxx, Bella face painting, Glitter Tattoo NYC, Caricatures by Jen, Balloon Artistry and s’mores making. Kids of all ages also visited Space Odyssey East, where they played the hottest video games available on the planet in the arcade mecca.
Super Saturday was created in 1998 by Donna Karan and the late Liz Tilberis, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar and President of OCRF. Donna Karan has sponsored and hosted the event since its founding, and Kelly Ripa has been a host since 2004.  Beginning in 2007, sponsor QVC has broadcasted live from the event.

Last Wednesday in Saint Tropez, France, the Gala hosted by Foundation Chairman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Event Fundraising Chairman Milutin Gatsby, Foundation Executive Director Justin Winters and the Event’s Chairs Boris Collardi, Philippe Cousteau and Jared Leto raised over $25 million forThe Leonardo DiCaprioFoundation, dedicated to protecting Earth’s last wild places and implementing solutions to build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world.
Leonardo DiCaprio opened the evening with an impassioned speech about the Foundation’s work and stated, Today we stand at the 11th Hour – facing a tipping point of environmental crises unprecedented in human history.  Not since the age of the dinosaurs have so many species of plants and animals become extinct in such a short period of time. We must now make an effort to protect the rich biodiversity that could allow nature to eventually recover. The good news is there are solutions to these massive problems. Efforts like tonight will start addressing them.“

DiCaprio proceeded to open the live auction with his own Harley-Davidson Motorcycle signed by Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro and himself.

Since 1998, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has built longstanding relationships with environmental leaders and experts, staying continually engaged and active on the most pressing issues of our day – protecting biodiversity, oceans and forest conservation, and climate change.

The Foundation’s strategic approach to philanthropy relies upon key partnerships with effective environmental organizations and active collaboration with other funders that share the Foundation’s goals and can magnify its impact. Efforts are directed in two areas – providing grants to innovative, results-driven initiatives and media efforts that inspire the public to make a difference in the fight to protect our planet for future generations. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is a component fund of the California Community Foundation.

C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s conducted the Gala Live Auction. The top-earning auction item of the evening was a miniature model of Young America by Donald McNarry. Other live-auction items included a fully restored 1957 VW Beetle Coupe, a stay in a WIMCO oceanside villa in St. Barth’s during the St. Barth’s Bucket regatta, and an extraordinary diamond encrusted cuff bracelet from famous Italian jewelry designer Pomellato. Gala guests were also enthusiastic donors in a reverse auction for equipment, tools and technology --- raising over $200,000 --- thus ensuring that students continue to have access to the state-of-the art equipment that is critical to their IYRS learning experience.  The rare Abeking & Rasmussen Beetle Cat raffle was won by Rebecca Allen.  Ms. Allen was inspired to enter the raffle by her father – he grew up sailing a Beetle Cat he won through a lottery, appropriately named WINDFALL.

The highlight of the evening was a cool Texan charmed performance given by Lyle Lovett & His Band. Lovett's inimitable way with a melody and lyrics made for a magical experience. The IYRS Gala crowd was on Lyle’s side and cheered each song enthusiastically as they did the two encores, including the setting appropriate “If I Had a Boat."

In 2013, Malteser International helped around 10 million people in 26 countries, delivering over $60 million in aid. The agency has provided emergency relief and recovery aid for nearly 60 years worldwide, responding to major crises such as the 2004 Asian Tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and more recently, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and the ongoing Syrian crisis. Malteser International helps the vulnerable and marginalized lead a healthy life with dignity, without distinction of religion, race or political persuasion.

It was a boot-stomping, wolf-whistling, sing-Ophelia-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-good time earlier this summer at a benefit concert for the Jay Heritage Center, where 200 guests in blue jeans and wildflowered frocks defied damp skies to get their dose of "Poor Old Shine." The evening was dedicated to raising funds towards continued restoration of the gardens and meadow of the landmark Jay Estate in Rye, New York.

Dubbed "Best New Artist of 2013" by New York Times writer, David Vecsey, the band of 5 young Americana musicians brewed up a playlist of pitch perfect rock, folk and roots influenced harmonies. They got the crowd singing along to their home hewn lyrics in songs like "Weeds or Wildflowers" and "Right Now" while also giving new spins to old standards from The Band.

Max Shakun joins the audience
Perched on hay bales around the stage, guests were equally dazzled by the visual artistry of the group; the deft fingers of Chris Freeman, Max Shakun, Antonio Alcorn, Harrison Goodale and Erik Hischmann coaxed the most rapturous music out of antique saws, a 19th century pump organ, banjos, mandolins, vibraphones, drums and bass. By the second set people were dancing on the ochre brick floor and singing along to the "Hurry All Around" and the boisterous "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me." The band closed out an already memorable night with every member singing a soulful stanza of "Goodnight Irene."

The debut event was co-chaired by Annie Teillon, Lisa King, Louise Sumner and Meghann Kelly. Together with volunteers from JHC's Preservationists they made the unique venue - a 1907 Carriage House - positively glow with cascades of twinkling lights and bouquets of yellow daffodils in mason jars. Sponsors of the event were the Wine Cellar and Yonkers Brewery.

Robert Wilson and performers on stage at "One Thousand Nights and One Night," The 21st Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit.
Last Saturday night in Water Mill, the Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation celebrated its 21st Annual Summer Benefit – One Thousand Nights and One Night: Sleepless Nights of Sheherazadeat The Watermill Center.  This benefit, which thanks to the American arts and culture impresario Robert Wilson is always without question, the most spectacular social event of the Hamptons summer season. There are others just populated with supporters but the Wilson touch separates it from all others.

Not surprisingly, the evening raised a record setting $2.2 million to support the Center’s International Summer Arts Program and the year-round Artist Residency and Education Programs, providing young and emerging artists a unique opportunity to develop their work. Mr. Wilson may also be the most spectacular fund-raiser of the arts and culture crowd who carry the big checkbooks.
His words about it:“In terms of what we do at Watermill, I am proudest when we showcase work that has never been seen in the United States, together with the work of young artists. I am grateful for the unparalleled support we receive each year to continue to provide a creative environment for artists to explore new idea.”

Honoring international art patron Shaikha Paula Al-Sabah, the evening featured new work by 100 artists from 30 countries; the US premiere of Portraits of Lady Gaga by Robert Wilson; and a highlight performance of SISYPHUS byacclaimed experimental theatre director, visual artist and choreographer, Dimitris Papaioannou.

Upon arrival guests are introduced to the theme upon arrival at the roadside. They were greeted by the light of the setting sun passing through a cloud installation, titled n.u.a.g.e.s by Annick Lavalee-Benny and La Noche, a unique specialty cocktail created by Casamigos Tequila for the occasion.
Almost 1400 international curators, collectors, artists and benefactors roamed the Center’s 8 acres to experience 27-site specific installations and performances interspersed amongst outdoor sculptures and artifacts including Baboo Liao and Gintare Minelgaite’s1001 Nights in America, a whimsical, satirical look at American home life.

At the entrance to the dinner tent, Rolls Royce -- quintessential symbol of elegance and luxury of the Automotive Age --   displayed a Phantom Drophead Coupe convertible (yours for only $475,000 – and I can assure you there were a good number of guests who could write out a check for it on the spot).
It was an evening of theater and wonder for guests who naturally expected nothing less from Mr. Wilson’s creative palette. Among them: Reem Acra, Lisa Anastos, Yigal Azrouel, Princess Khaliya Aga Khan, Daniel Arsham, Deborah Bancroft, Ali Banisadr, Kelly Behun and Jay Sugarman (co-chairs), Fabiola Beracasa, Ross Bleckner, Phillip Bloch, Valerie Boster, Estrellita and Daniel Brodsky, Henry Buhl (co-chair), Janna Bullock (co-chair), Christine Wächter-Campbell and William I. Campbell (co-chairs), Kylie Cappelli, Kim Cattrall, Lucinda Childs, Melissa Chiu, Alistair and Blair Voltz Clarke, Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane (co-chairs), Nedenia Hutton Craig, Jennifer Creel, Graziano de Boni, Cecilia Dean, Gustaf Demarchelier, Kyle DeWoody, Stacy Engman, Lise Evans, Whitney Fairchild, Wendy and Roger Ferris (co-chair), Filipa Fino,Philip Glass, Barbara Goldsmith (co-chair), Jamee Gregory, Audrey Gruss, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Amanda Hearst, Anne Hearst McInerney and Jay McInerney (co-chairs), Kim Heirston, Leila Heller, Sally Hershberger, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Nir Hod, Maja Hoffman and Stanley Buchthal.
And more: Jane Holzer, Anne Huntington, Isabelle Huppert, Lucia Hwong-Gordon, Item Idem, Carola and Bob Jain (co-chairs), Jim Jarmusch (who performed alongside Phil Kline), Emilia and Ilya Kabakov, Phil Kline, Zane Lewis, Dorothy Lichtenstein (co-chair), Eugenio Lopez,  Fern Mallis, David Mann, Christophe de Menil, B. Remember there were 1400.
Eric Parnes, whose work, Gérôme's Helmets continued, inspired the evening’s dress code “Bazaar Chic”. Wilson enlightened guests that the theme referenced the honoree, a senior member of the Kuwaiti royal family - Shaikha Paula Al-Sabah -- and because as he announced for the first time, the Paris Opera has commissioned him and Phillip Glass to produce a new opera - The Palace of Arabian Nights.
The highlight of the dinner was the live auction conducted by veteran auctioneer Simon de Pury, which together with the online auction previewed and hosted by Artsy, raised $1.2 million. De Pury, the auctioneer’s auctioneer added to the drama.  Among the notable lots in the live auction, were two Portraits of Lady Gaga by Robert Wilson influenced by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ portrait of Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière and Jacques-Louis David’s famed painting, The Death of Marat, exhibited at the Louvre last year, as well as works by Frank Gehry, Anish Kapoor, Anselm Kiefer, Emilia and Ilya Kabakov, and an unsolicited, anonymous donation of $100,000 for a commissioned work by Robert Wilson.
And on with the show. Afterward, guests enjoyed dessert and dancing to DJ Chris Bachmann, presented by Troy Curtis Group, in the silent auction tent.  Previewed online by Artsy, the silent auction featured over 120 lots from artists including Farley Aguilar, Derrick Adams, Diana Al-Hadid, Daniel Arsham, Alice Aycock, Jeff Bark, Richard Barnes, Sanford Biggers, Ross Bleckner, Ryan Brown, Chokra, Alexis Dahan, E.V. Country life in Fitch’s Corner. The horse farm of Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels in Millbrook, was the location for the Fitch's Corner Horse Trials, the regional event that is a favorite for high performance riders.  Four former Olympians -- Bruce Davidson, Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin and Will Coleman, brought their younger horses to compete for the Tiffany & Co. awards.

The theme for the social events was the Chinese Year of the Horse. Co-Chairmen, Darren Henault and Nancy Henze created for the annual Blue Jean Ball a Chinese decor and a Chinese banquet for the 600 guests.  DJ Flo, up from New York City, cranked up the music as guests danced under the canvas lighted by hundreds of melon and raspberry colored lanterns.  Fernanda Gilligan, daughter of the hosts, was celebrating her engagement to architect Adrian Jess of London -- an October wedding is planned in Northern Ireland.

The following day another 300 attended the Spectator Luncheon which began with a “Sip and Shop” organized by Holland & Holland, Champagne Georg and the fashion website What2WearWhere. Guests could shop-shop-shop in 50 boutiques featuring home and fashion as well as items for horse and hound. The luncheon was sponsored by real estate firms  Houlihan Lawrence, and Stribling who provided ringside seating for the stadium jumping, and ladies and gents wore hats as convenient.

Nancy and David Hathaway, a Master of the Millbrook Foxhounds were honored with the Fitch's Corner Award.  The ceremony was enhanced with a Collector Car Parade sponsored by J McLaughlin and a Parade of the Hounds.  The weather was perfect and the competition was flawless. An ideal day in the countryside was had by all.
